The
National Electoral Commission (NEC) on Monday released the timetable for the
coming general elections, declaring October 25, 2015 as the Election Day.
NEC
Chairman Justice Damian Lubuva said in a statement issued in Dar es Salaam
yesterday that the names of the presidential, parliamentary and councils’
aspirants will be announced on August 21.
The
schedule also indicates that the campaigns will be conducted for 63 days —
between August 22 and October 24.
The
election timetable comes at the time when NEC is also conducting countrywide
voter registration using the Biometric Voters Registration (BVR) kits whereas
the exercise has already been completed in some regions, including Njombe,
Mtwara and Lindi.
According
to the final timetable for registration of voters issued by NEC, the exercise
is currently taking place in various regions and it is expected to be completed
by July 16.
Also as
part of the preparation for the general elections, NEC is currently working on
the demarcation of constituencies while it is expected to issue the new list of
constituencies, where the elections will be conducted any time from now.
According
to NEC, the demarcation of the constituencies will base on the population
people in respective areas as provided by the National Bureau of Statistics
(NBS) and the number of current constituencies, which is 239.
On the
other hand, some of the political parties have also produced their party’s
nomination timetable whereas on the side of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), the
presidential aspirants are scheduled to pick nomination forms between June 3
and July 2.
According
to CCM Secretary for Ideology and Publicity Nape Nnauye, Zanzibar presidential
aspirants will pick the forms and get sponsors in the same period of time as on
Tanzania Mainland.
For MPs
and councillors, Mr Nnauye said that they will pick nomination forms from July
15 and will be required to return them on July 19.
“The
Union presidential candidate on CCM ticket will be known on July 12, the day
the ruling party expects to complete the nomination process for its flag bearer
in the general elections in October,” he said.
On the
side of the Civic United Front (CUF) in Zanzibar, the presidential aspirants
started picking forms on Monday and had been given one week to fill and return
the forms by May 31.
On the
side of Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), the party’s presidential
aspirant will be known on August 2.
